We just finished our final week for the first round of the Five Night a Week Training for all the kids within MRSA.   The kids have been enjoying getting lots of touches on the ball, hanging with their friends, and learning some great soccer.  I have seen tremendous improvement in the kids who have been getting touches on the ball.  Our intent was to extend the training into next week, but regrettably we don't have any field space available.  The Club is currently reviewing other field options and we will post the next series of Five Night a Week Training as soon as we have confirmed a location.  Just because we don't have the formal training this week doesn't mean you can't get in your touches... call a friend, a neighbor or a teammate and get out and kick it on your own.  Be creative and invent your own 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 games.  Then share them with us when we start back up!  If you need a copy of the Individual Skill Drills we've been working on, it's attached!
Sorry about any inconvenience!

2011 - We have alot of teams playing PSPL Spring League who are in need of some additional players, specifcally U11 & U12 Girls. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Coach Mike for details. This is open to all players within MRSA.

2011 Tryouts are right around the corner... Coach Mike has created a Player Development/Tryout Committee to prepare for the new season.

MRFC... we are in the process of updating our Club directives so that everyone has a clear understanding of how we fit in the soccer community... stay tuned for updates.

Volunteers... MRFC is always looking for good people to volunteer within the Club. Coach Mike could really use someone to be the Communications voice for the Club... emails, web updates (creating the documents), surrounding Club liason. There's plenty to do, don't be shy!

The whistle blows on a clear, brisk evening at White River High School as the ball quickly moves down the pitch. Hamm shuffle steps past the great defender Maldini, who’s leaning off balance reaching to stop her progression towards goal. Maradona streaks down the line screaming for the ball just as Hamm sees the run and hits a precision ball to the feet of the great scorer. Immediately Marta overlaps the great Maradona calling for the ball back post closely marked by fleet-footed Beckenbaur who steals the bending pass and quickly creates a counter-attack on the opposing goal. Beckenbaur creatively curves the ball to a flanking Akers who receives the ball with the outside of her foot and quickly turns on a dime. Lilly’s on her heels as Akers accelerates to open space in the midfield area and distributes to the masterful Messi, who quickly wall passes to an open Wambach who dribbles past a defensive support of Maradona and heel passes to Messi . Gracefully, Messi one-touches the pass into the side netting of the goal. Goal…Goal…Goal…!

This day dream of mine almost seemed like reality at MRFC’s 1st annual Winter Blast Clinic on December 10th. Over 40 future stars ages 5-13 came out and played soccer with friends both old and new, at what I hope will be just the first of many formative clinics geared towards development and fun hosted by Mt. Rainier Futbol Club. As a spectator, I was delighted and honored just to stand and watch the future of this game I love so much being played right here in my own backyard. As a coach, I marveled at the creativity and talent exhibited at this fun, non-competitive event.

Best of all, we still have three more days of this clinic to enjoy. Kids can join us again this Friday, December 17th, Saturday, December 18th and Friday, December 31st for three more evenings filled with games, scrimmages and no expectations but fun. Who knows? Maybe one day my day dream will become a reality when we see these very same kids on TV competing at the highest level. Come out and join us this weekend and live the dream!!

12/1/10 - MRFC Would Like To Welcome Mike Clarke As Our New Director Of Coaching

Director’s Introduction

I’m very excited about the opportunity to work with MRFC as the new Director of Coaching.  I’ve been coaching and training both boys and girls of all ages throughout the Puget Sound for over 20 years.  I have a deep passion for the game of soccer and I thoroughly enjoy developing players.  My philosophy is to create a fun and challenging environment where the coach and player are faced with making their own decisions… just like the game demands!  And through these decisions we will build a strong soccer community built on teamwork, character, commitment and determination.  The beautiful game of soccer provides a wonderful environment for kids to get some exercise, learn to work together, and to make new friends.  It’s my job to facilitate and nurture this environment where kids get to learn, but are not bored… challenged, but not discouraged.

My job is to help the Club define our future direction, train and educate our coaches, and create a fun environment for the kids.  I look forward to working with the community and surrounding Clubs that share our philosophy of player development and the building of individual character.  This can only be done through a valued and respected partnership where we all share a common cause… the kids!

Players come in all sizes, shapes and colors.  The game does not discriminate.  Some of the kids will choose to play with their local neighborhood team where they value their friendships first.  Others will choose a more competitive environment where they can be challenged at the highest levels possible.  My job is to make sure that we can offer our kids every opportunity at any level.  This is much easier said than done.  It takes a lot of hard work, determination and commitment from a team.  I’m not looking to build a short-term program… I’m looking to build a long-term partnership.  This includes coaches, players, parents and the community at large.  And the only way we can be successful is through honest and open communication.  Please take the time to ask questions and really understand what we are trying to build… and then jump on board, hang on and enjoy the journey.  The measure of success will be the number of smiles we can put on the faces of our kids, and the confidence and character they develop as they grow into young adults.

Player development and politics are at opposite ends of the spectrum.  My biggest challenge will be to focus and support the development of our program while filtering the necessary politics from our coaches, players and parents.

Mike's Background....

Coach Mike is a local boy who attended Mt Tahoma High School in Tacoma, and played his youth soccer through TPCJSA.  He’s had the opportunity to play and coach with some of the top soccer talents in the area.  He earned his USSF National “A” License and National Coaching Diploma back in 2000.

Coach Mike has the experience of building a successful Select Club and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to MRFC:

Passion for the game!

Deep understanding of the Technical, Tactical and Functional demands of the game.

Commitment to player development

Willingness to help others succeed

Focused, driven and results-oriented personality

“It might be tough to recognize him at the pitch, because he’s known to be one of the kids!”

9/1/10 - MT Hood Challenge Cup

MRFC_GU13_Mt_Hood_champs

MRFC GU-13 Blue  wins big in Oregon in August.

Our girls started pool play with two games on Friday against Chinook Ice and Hillsboro United.  Both matches ended as 3-0 victories for MRFC with strong play from our defenders against two strong teams.  Saturday we metup with Williamette United and again came away with a 3-0 winwith two goals two minutes apart early in the match.  The team played very purposeful soccer and looked forward to Sunday's final against Hillsboro United.  We knew that Hillsboro would be looking to get back at us from Friday's match and after a scoreless first half we were finallyable to put a ball past their keeper.  The team did not sit back and continued to push as Hillsboro looked to equalize but a corner kick to the back post was perfectlyheaded in  to give us some insurance.  Two more goals followed to round out a 4-0 final and the championship.

Our girls scored 13 goals from 10 different players over the 4 games and shutouts where shared between Caitlin and MacKenize who did a great job directing the defense.  It was great to see the team set their personal and team goals and achieve them.

MRFC G98 Blue won the Clash at the Boarder Gold division Final in Camas Washington this past Sunday, besting Portland’s Blue Crush 3-1 in a very fast paced and exciting game. Bothteams gave it everything they had on a hot humid day, right up to the final whistle. First half goals were scored by Hannah Schatz from a corner kick delivered by Hailey Brandner, Annie Smithunassisted and Jasmine Smith assisted by Sydney Cooke in the second half. The first half was a strong midfield battle with Sydney Cooke, Madalyn Landreth, Courtney Taylor, Annie Smith and Hannah Schatz controlling and pushing the ball forward to Anna Jennings, Grace Clapshaw, Jax Wettelandand Jasmine Smith, not allowing Crush to gain any offensive momentum. Crush was continually denied by the defensive work of Melanie Torr, Alex Wetteland, Hailey Brandner and Karina Provo as well as the sure hands of Goalkeeper Jamie Flynn. Head Coach, Steve Cooke, congratulated the continued hard work of the girls.  “Once again a true team effort brought them to the finals and the team skill and determination was what won it.”  Next stop the OswegoNike Cup in Oregon in mid July. Good luck, girls!

4/27/10 - MRFC G98 wins US Club Washington Cup

 GU_11_Blue

MRFC G98 Blue (Cooke) won the US Club Washington Cup State Final at the Starfire Sports Complex this past Sunday besting ISC G98 ADP Red 1-0 in what turned out to be a very fast paced and exciting game with both teams giving it everything they had to the final whistle. Grace Clapshaw scored what would be the only goal 15 minutes into the first half with a twenty yard crossing shot into the back left corner of the goal.  The first half was mostly MRFC in control. ISC came out in the second half determined to make it a game and they did. The final ten minutes was a defensive battle from MRFC. Jamie Flynn, MRFC’s goalkeeper, and the rest of the defense came up big denying the hard pressing ISC offense. Head Coach, Steve Cooke, congratulated the hard work of the girls.  “It was a true team effort that brought them to the finals and the shear determination on the day that won it.”  The team is now slated to represent our region at the Mustang Stampede in Northern California in early August. Good luck, girls!  We will be watching and cheering!

3/7/10 -  2009/2010 Challenge Cup Champions!  MRFC B92 Blue

BU_17_Blue

The MRFC B92 Blue coached by Mark Maxey took home the Challenge Cup Championship over the weekend.  The Boys got by the Redhawks on Saturday in the semifinal by a score of  2-1.  Bryant Maxey got on the scoreboard first with an assist from Tim Knoles.  At approximately the 15 min mark MRFC received a red card and were down to 10 men the rest of the way.  Shortly after the card, the Redhawks answered and tied the score at 1-1.  The teams battled throughout the game until Knoles found Maxey again with about four minutes left to lead the team to a 2-1 victory and a spot in the Final.

In the Final on Sunday, MRFC went up against ECFC.   Again MRFC got on the board first.  From about 40 yds out Dan Gunstone took a free kick that found the head of Joe Haynes for the first goal.  Again, like Saturday,  the opponent answered right back to tie the score.  Both teams battled until the 90th minute when the ECFC defense tried to pass back to their keeper who missed the ball and Joel Ogdon from MRFC took advantage and tapped in the game winner.

Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff.  We are all very proud of you!!

2/1/10 -  Some big changes from the Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Our Club bylaws have been updated and are now better organized.  Additional voting privileges were added that affect each team.  Along with the General Board, each team will now have a parent representative with a vote at our AGM.  This includes bylaw changes and election of officers.  This is your Club and we want you to exercise your right to help shape it.

We also did a complete restructuring of how the bylaws look, making them more professional and hopefully easier to read.  The new bylaws are posted on this website.

In addition to the bylaws,we elected a new Secretary.  We welcome Chad Jowell to the Executive Board.  Chad brings passion and energy and we look forward to his help.

The new budget was approved and is available upon request.  The minutes from the entire meeting are posted on the website.

2/1/10 -The landscape of youth soccer is changing

Here at MRFC, our goal is to have our teams playing at the highest level possible.  Currently our teams play in the Premier and State Leagues, District III and the PSPL.  The State is proposing a new structure and leagues that will affect our decisions as we head into the new year and beyond.   What this means is we will be making some decisions within our own Club to better serve our members and give them the opportunity to play against the best.  Check back often for updates.

2/1/10 - New Uniforms, Club Wear, and Scarves

We are excited to announce that we have changed our uniform brand to Under Armour.  Our colors will be red and white, with blue warm-ups.  We are also happy to announce that Soccer West will be the uniform supplier.  Not only will they supply the uniforms, but they will be offering great deals on all your soccer needs, including MRFC Club Wear.  Go to their website and stock up on all things MRFC.

As most of you know, we also have scarves available. From our initial order of 300, most are sold.  So there are alot of people out there representing the Club.  For those that have them, they will tell you they look great and keep you warm. There are still a few left.  If you are interested, let us know and we will get one to you.
