MRFC Futures Academy Overview

The MRFC Futures Academy's primary mission is to help young players develop a passion for the game while having fun! This program provides a great introduction to soccer. We do this by playing 1v1, 2v2, and4v4 training while providing basic skill development. This program is designed for both boys and girls ages 3- 6**. (must be 3 years old prior to start date of session)

The registration allows parents to register for one training block or multiple blocks throughout the year and attend as many or few sessions in the block(s) as you like. We plan to offer 12 blocks throughout the year, in two different locations  Each block will run for approximately six weeks consisting of twelve total sessions,  (in is important to note that if a training session is canceled due to weather, field conditions, or other mandates outside the control of MRFC, the possibility  exists, the session may not be made up)

The Futures Academy trainers are a mix of certified coaches trained to teach at this age and  mentorship of our premier level high school players, (many of which are also certified) who volunteer their time in order to invest in the 'futures' of our club. All trainers follow our Futures Academy curriculum additional support is provided on site by club staff members.

**Transition Year

The transition year for your player from Futures 1 into Futures 2 is typically age 6.  However, it may be based on their skill set. A six year old player just starting soccer may benefit from having at least one block in the Futures program prior to moving to Futures 2.  Likewise a 5 year old who is excelling may be encouraged to move to Futures 2 and continue to be challenged.

WHY ACADEMY STYLE?

  • While traditional soccer is great for older kids who already have a grasp of the game and are developing a competitive spirit, most kids (ages 3 – 5) are not ready for 40 minutes of continuous soccer.
    • The Futures Academy we use several quick activities that help teach skill while keeping the player engaged with a ball at their feet almost continuously
  • In traditional soccer stronger more aggressive players dominate even without good skills, while less experienced players tend to watch the game
    • In the Futures Academy program players are matched to their skillsets.  Stronger players play against stronger players while those just learning are paired with other players and a coach who excels at teaching the basics of ball mastery
  • Traditional soccer is team focused
    • The Futures Academy is individual focused.  As players skill improve, we move the player to other areas to continue to challenge and grow the athlete.  A player who is not being challenged loses interest and stops growing in skill
  • Traditional soccer is focused on goals and winning games
    • The Futures Academy is player focused.  We try and create parity on our practice fields, so players get the experience of scoring goals and having goals scored against them. It is important for young players to understand winning and losing is part of the game.
  • Traditional soccer is more rigid with coaches telling players what to do
    • Every player is different. The Futures Academy uses a discovery method guiding players, and allowing them to discover a better way, instead of being told how to perform a task.
  • Traditional soccer for the youngest of players is no longer traditional
    • Academy style training for the youngest of athletes has become the gold standard for young soccer players around the word, including some of the top soccer programs globally like England, Brazil, Spain, and Germany.
